One of the questions we are asked most is "how much do I need?". Figuring that out is a relatively easy process. If you are trying to calculate how much rock, sand or mulch your project requires, you will need the length, width and depth (in feet) of the area you wish to cover. Once you have those numbers, just use this formula:
LENGTH (in feet) x WIDTH (in feet) x DEPTH (in feet - see chart below)
Divide this total by 27. The number you get is the quantity you need in cubic yards. For example, an area that is 20' long, by 11 feet wide and 3" deep would be calculated as follows:
20' x 11' x .25' = 50 divided by 27 = 2.03 cubic yards
One thing to keep in mind: when calculating soils, garden mixes, road crush and fill sand, you will need to add about 30 percent to your final calculation, as the product will compact down.
