Ducky!]]>Wed, 02 May 2012 23:20:17 -0800http://www.cliffslandscaping.com/1/post/2012/05/rubber-ducky.html I’m kind of old school.  I’m of the belief that kids belong outside, playing on swings, running around and climbing trees.  I’m also a parent.  I know that playing on swings leads to seeing how high you can go then jumping off.  Running around leads to road rash when you take a header into the gravel.  Climbing trees leads to the opposite – falling out of the tree.

“But Paul” you despair, “is there a product out there that can reduce some of those risks for my children?”  Sure.  Abstinence.  That, however, seems a bit drastic.

Allow me to introduce you to rubber.  Wait, wait.  Let me rephrase that.  Allow me to introduce you to rubber mulch .

In short, rubber mulch is recycled tires.  The basic process to transform worn out all-seasons to enviro-friendly landscaping material is fairly straight forward.  Once a tire has worn out its usefulness, it is cryo-frozen and smashed into smaller uniform pieces, from 3/8” to ¾” in size.  These pieces are run through high powered magnets and metal detectors to remove the steel belting.  The pieces are then run through a colouring process that essentially bonds the colour right onto the rubber.  This special colouring process is what helps our rubber mulch keep its colour so well that it has a 10 year guarantee that it will hold 80% of its colour.  Does it cost more than traditional bark mulch?  Yes it does, but unlike bark, rubber mulch doesn't break down and need to be replaced.  Over 5

Now that you’ve made it through the boring part, here’s the important stuff.  Allow me to quote: “A softer surface than traditional wood mulch, impact studies have shown a significant reduction in contusion and head-related injuries, with an IPEMA ASTM F1292-09 Certification for fall heights up to 16 feet. Extensive testing by the EPA and certification by the IPEMAsupports rubber mulch as environmentally-friendly and safe for your kids and pets.”

Bottom line?  Rubber mulch is not only a great looking landscaping product, it is a safe landscaping product.  And as Miss Teen South Carolina once said, “gibberish, gibberish, gibberish, for the children”.  Words to live by, folks.  Words to live by.

]]><![CDATA[I’m Sexy & I Know It]]>Thu, 12 Apr 2012 20:30:40 -0800http://www.cliffslandscaping.com/1/post/2012/04/im-sexy-i-know-it.html So, you’ve decided to sell your house.  As your realtor is sure to tell you, curb appeal is a very important part of the selling process.  Not only does it provide a welcome first impression to your home, but studies have shown that a well landscaped yard can dramatically improve not only the sale price of your house, but the speed with which it sold.  Here are 6 different ways to help dress up your landscaping:

1 – Add some colour:    Annuals are a fairly inexpensive way to add some spice to a yard.  If you don’t have a lot of beds, use decorative pots and containers.  Make sure you weed them while you’re at it!

2 – Mulch your beds:    Adding a fresh layer of bark mulch or chips around trees, shrubs and in flower beds is a quick (and easy to shovel) way to freshen up your yard. 

3 – Trim & cut:    Trim back overgrown trees, shrubs and hedges.  Prune the dead branches on the trees, take the trimmer to the hedges, and clean out the leaves and debris from the base of the shrubs.

4 – Touch up your concrete:    If you have any retaining walls, make sure they are standing straight and level.  Replace any broken patio stones and sidewalk blocks.  If your patio has that sinking feeling, pull the bricks up, add some sand underneath and re-lay the bricks.  Make sure to fill the cracks with a fresh layer of sand.

5 – Clean up water features:    Clean leaves and debris out of ponds and waterfalls, make sure everything runs well.  Make sure you have fresh clean water in birdbaths and fountains.  Don’t forget to turn them on for your open house!

6 – Lighten up!:    Add some inexpensive solar lights down walkways, in front of flower beds or around the deck.  Get the attention of those evening shoppers!

Now, sit back and let the offers roll in.  Oh, and that weekend that you’re planning on moving?

]]><![CDATA[Meet the neighbors!]]>Mon, 18 Apr 2011 15:27:48 -0800http://www.cliffslandscaping.com/1/post/2011/04/meet-the-neighbors.htmlOne of my favorite parts of what we do out here is where we get to do it.  It's hard to beat our commute, and we are close enough to town that if I need an emergency slurpee, it's not an all day ordeal, but we have all the benefits of rural living.  Take, for example, our new neighbors.  They've only moved in over the past few days, but they are definitely making themselves at home.  Not only do they stop by at all hours of the day (and night), but they have even started inviting themselves over for dinner.

They're a friendly bunch, so the next time you are heading out here, keep your eyes peeled.  They are hard to miss, as there is over 20 of them. 

On an unrelated note, we're open!  Hours for the month of April are Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. We will be closed on Good Friday though.  The yard is drying up nicely, and stock is arriving daily.  Come on out and take a look around, we look forward to seeing everyone again!

]]><![CDATA[Spring has sprung!]]>Sun, 03 Apr 2011 09:31:38 -0800http://www.cliffslandscaping.com/1/post/2011/04/spring-has-sprung.html Well, it's April 3rd.  The sun is no longer just a rumor, you can actually see land under all that snow, and I even heard a bird chirping.  Spring in Alberta!  I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to a few months of complaining about the mosquitos.

It finally looks like summer is around the corner (and a few miles down the block), and we here at Cliff's are preparing for our busy season.  We have product arriving almost daily, and quite a bit of it is new stuff!  New styles and colors of slate, we have extended our line of Expocrete products... I can't wait for the season to get going!

One of the coolest new toys we have this year is a coring drill. If you're like me and you love the relaxing sounds of running water, but just don't have the space in your yard for a pond and waterfall setup, this might be right up your alley.  We can now drill boulders, from small ones up to 4' tall.  We will have a selection of pre-drilled boulders here, or you can pick a boulder out and we'll drill it for you.  Below is an idea of what a bubbler looks like, and we'll put up a video on how to set up one of these great feature rocks soon.  It really is one of those "do it in a weekend" projects that you and your family will enjoy all summer long.

One of the things we wanted to do with this site was keep you, our loyal customers, up to date on what's going on out here.  We'll have tips and hints, information on new products, and we'll probably have a little fun with this as well.  We enjoy what we do out here, and our hope is that you enjoy coming out!

If there's something you'd like to see addressed, or if you have a comment or question, send us a line and we'll get an answer back to you.  If it's something that we think others might be wondering about, we may just make you famous and answer your question in public!
